We have been active in the study and treatment of addiction for almost thirty years now and it is an area that is near and dear to our hearts. We understand that addiction is a biological disease process, not a moral issue, and has absolutely nothing to do with your will power or strength of character. Addiction is a genetic disease and since you can’t pick your family histories it makes little sense to blame a victim of inheritance for the disease they are struggling with. We strongly believe that you are not responsible for your addiction BUT you are responsible for what you do (or don’t do) to fix it!
Medication assisted treatment using buprenorphine/naloxone combinations such as Suboxone, Zubsolv, and Bunavail is a relatively new addition to the treatment of addiction. It has become popular as a less expensive, more readily available, and safer alternative to methadone maintenance clinics. It also differs significantly from methadone maintenance in that the ultimate goal now is to eventually get patients totally off of medication, allowing them to live life free without drug dependency. This is accomplished through initial stabilization of the patient by replacing the opioid of addiction with buprenorphine to eliminate withdrawal symptoms and minimize craving. With the active pursuit of ongoing addiction recovery treatment in addition to the medication assistance, patients find that they slowly heal and eventually desire to taper off of and eliminate their use of buprenorphine too.
